Higher Taxon OPISTHOKONTA Cavalier-Smith, 1987

Introduction

This taxon comprises a broad group of eukaryotes, including both the animal and fungal kingdoms. In at least one stage of their life cycle, they form cells that are propelled by a single posterior flagellum. The fungi (Holomycota/Nucletmycea) have cell walls that contain chitin, unlike those of plants, some protists and bacteria. The animals (Holozoa/Metazoa) are multicellular organisms with cells that lack rigid cell walls.
