Introduction
The family Ophiuridae is cosmopolitan, particularly in the deep-sea, and contains approximately 44 extant genera and 344 species.
Ophiurids are distinguished from other families in the order Ophiurida by the following combination of character states: disc covered with thick scales or plates; no granulation; oral papillae few; an unpaired infradental papilla at apex of each jaw; arms inserted laterally and fused with disc; arms stout or moderately long, widest at base, arm spines short, adpressed.
