Introduction

The family Ophiactidae is cosmopolitan. It comprises five genera and 69 species.

Ophiactids are distinguished from other ophiurid families by the following combination of character states: arms slender, disc with granules or spinules; teeth broad, square-tipped, only a single papilla (or reduced tooth) if any, at the superficial end of the column of teeth, one or two (rarely three) distal oral papillae, usually well spaced from the apex of the jaw.
