Introduction

The family Odontasteridae is found in the Atlantic and southern oceans, including New Zealand and southern Australia.

Five odontasterid genera are known but only one is recorded in Australian waters, represented by one species. This family is distinguished from others in the order Valvatida by the following combination of character states: arms five; body form pentagonal or broadly stellate, with odd interradial marginal in each series, more paxillose than most Goniasteridae; mouth-angle plates bearing recurved spine or spines with glassy tips at apex.
