NERITIDAE: Neritina auriculata Lamarck, 1822 — Hedley, C. 1908. Studies on Australian Mollusca. Part 10. Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales 33: 456–489 [478] (Hedley comments after correspondence with E.A. Smith that the type locality of G. sulcosa is in error, the taxon being a variety of the common but variable Mediterranean species G. ardens von Salis. The mistake has been repeated in a few subsequent lists, viz., Angas, G.F. 1867. List of species of marine Mollusca found in Port Jackson Harbour, New South Wales, and on the adjacent coasts, with notes on their habits, etc. Part 1. Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1867: 185-233 [217]; Tenison-Woods, J.E. 1879. Census; with brief descriptions of the marine shells of Tasmania and the adjacent islands. Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania 1877: 26-57 [42]; Whitelegge, T. 1889. List of the Marine and Fresh-Water Invertebrate Fauna of Port Jackson and Neighbourhood. Proceedings of the Royal Society of New South Wales 23: 1-161 [269]; Pritchard, G. B. & Gatliff, J. H. 1902. Catalogue of the marine shells of Victoria. Proceedings of the Royal Society of Victoria 14(2)(5): 85-138 [132]; Hardy, ? 1915. [Title unknown]. Proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania 1915: 68; Pilsbry, H.A. 1889. Manual of Conchology. Philadelphia : Academy of Natural Sciences Philadelphia Vol. 11 pp. 1-519, pls 1-67. [243]; and probably others, all of which are misidentifications of various taxa; on p. 479 Hedley excludes Gibbula venusta A. Adams, 1853 (type locality: Australia), which is also a variety of G. ardens von Salis, by recommendation by E.A. Smith. This error is apparently only repeated in Pilsbry, H.A. 1889. Manual of Conchology. Philadelphia : Academy of Natural Sciences Philadelphia Vol. 11 pp. 1-519, pls 1-67. [244])
