Austral Avian Records 1: 129–180, but this specimen is the male illustrated on pl. 40 in Gould, J. 1848. The Birds of Australia. London : J. Gould Vol. 5 92 pls pp. [Pt 8, 1842], and not necessarily type material, see Meyer de Schauensee, R. 1957. On some avian types, principally Gould's, in the collection of the Academy. Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia 109: 123–246 who excludes it].

     Holotype ANSP 22942 (institution uncertain; Verreaux cat. no. 318), Western Australia (probably Rottnest or other islands near the Swan River).

Coast and off-shore islands of SW Australia, north to Shark Bay on west coast and east to Israelite Bay and Archipelago of the Recherche on the south, reaching Twilight Cove (Eyre) irregularly—breeding mainly on islands, and restricted largely to them along south-west coast between Fremantle and Cape Leeuwin.

Ecological Descriptors

Diurnal, estuary, folivore, granivore, gregarious, littoral, low open shrubland, low shrubland, migratory, nomadic, salt marsh, terrestrial, tussock grassland, volant.

Extra Ecological Information

Seasonal breeder, in rocky and dune coastal shrubberies and samphire, feeds on ground mainly on seeds of halophytes, grasses and forbs, flocks in small groups, flies directly with rapid wing beats punctuated by short glides on in-drawn wings, nests in rock crevices and under low rock overhangs almost exclusively on islands, incubation by female, both sexes rear pale grey-downed, yellowish-billed chicks, shifts seasonally to feed on mainland as well as islands when not breeding (but often flying to off-shore islands to roost).
