Species Myxilla (Myxilla) incrustans (Bowerbank, 1866)

  • Halichondria incrustans Bowerbank, J.S. 1866. A Monograph of the British Spongiadae. London : Ray Society Vol. 2 388 pp. [249] [Bowerbank attributes his species Halichondria incrustans to Johnston, listed as a synonym of Halichondria saburrata Johnston (Johnston, G. 1842. A History of British Sponges and Lithophytes. Edinburgh : W.H. Lizars 264 pp. 25 pls. (120)), but this has not been established subsequently. Bowerbank, J.S. & Norman, A.M. 1882. A Monograph of the British Spongiadae. (supplementary). London : Ray Society Vol. 4 250 pp. 17 pls. also incorrectly attributes the species to Esper, E.J.C. 1791. Fortsetzungen der Pflanzenthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Farben erleuchtet, nebst Beschreibungen. Nürnberg : Raspe Vol. 2 303 pp. 109 pls. [Sponges: pp. 165–282, 289–294; pls Spongia 1–7, 7A, 7B, 8, 9, 9A, 10–21, 21A, 22, 23, 23A, 24–48, 48A, 49] but neither Esper nor the revision of Ehlers, E. 1870. Die Esper'schen Spongien in der zoologischen Sammlung der K. Universität Erlangen. Erlangen : E.T. Jacob pp. 36. mention it; Gray, J.E. 1867. Notes on the arrangement of sponges, with the description of some new genera. Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London 1867: 492–558 pls 27–28 acknowledges Bowerbank (1866) as first author of the species, so Bowerbank's name stands].
