Subfamily Monocotylinae Taschenberg, 1879

Introduction

This subfamily is characterised by a haptor bearing one central and eight peripheral loculi, presence of marginal valve but hamuli may be present or absent. Additional haptoral characters include marginal haptoral papillae, small 'accessory' sclerites on the marginal haptoral papillae and on the haptoral septa. One to 3 testes. Principally parasites of the gills (Monocotyle Taschenberg, 1878; Clemacotyle Young, 1967) or skin (Dendromonocotyle Hargis, 1955) of rays. Each genus is known in Australia.
