Species Missulena hoggi Womersley, 1943
- Missulena hoggi Womersley, H. 1943. A revision of the spiders of the genus Missulena Walckenaer, 1805. Records of the South Australian Museum (Adelaide) 7: 249-269 [262].
Type data:
Holotype BMNH 43/14 ♂ adult, Swan River, WA
Comment: Hogg (1901) redescribed Eriodon incertum Cambridge, 1877 from a specimen in the BMNH. Womersley (1943) noted that this description did not agree with Cambridge's original description (Cambridge 1877) of E. incertum, but that it did agree with a second specimen referred to by Cambridge in the same paper. Womersley therefore proposed for this specimen the new name Missulena hoggi. He could not have seen Cambridge's and Hogg's specimen and gave a description based on another specimen (not specified). He listed five specimens in the WAM from WA localities, but did not state on which he based the description. Raven (1985) interpreted Hogg's (Cambridge's) specimen (which [he had] seen) as the holotype. F. Wanless (Curator at BMNH), at [Raven's] suggestion, [had] relocated and labelled the specimen as 'Probable Holotype' of M. hoggi Womersley, 1943.
