Introduction

Millepora platyphylla colonies are described by Eguchi (1968) as arborescent, composed of upstanding plates, or encrusting.

Northern Territory, Western Australia


Ecological Descriptors

Less than 18 metres depth: shallow.

Sessile, tropical.

 

Diagnosis

Eguchi (1968) outlined the following morphological characteristics of Millepora platyphylla – "Gastropores and dactylopores circular to irregularly polygonal at orifices exceptionally stellate; walls not extended above surface; 5 to 7 dactylopores commonly arranged around each gastropore, forming indistinct cyclosystems. Ampullae in the coenosteum forming little or no bulge at the surface".
