Species Microsmaris joannae Hirst, 1928

Introduction

Hirst (1928) described Microsmaris joannae (as goannae) from Eucalyptus bark in Adelaide. Womersley (1934) explained that the species was named for Miss Joan Cleland, and had no relation to the Australian goannas of the genus Varanus (Reptilia). Southcott (1961) argued persuasively that this name should be interpreted as an incorrect original spelling, and emended it to Microsmaris joannae, in honour of Joan Cleland.
