Type species:
Microcephalophis gracilis Lesson, 1834 (?non Hydrus gracilis Shaw, 1802; Smith (1926) and McDowell (1972) each regard Microcephalophis gracilis Lesson, 1834 as a new combination for Hydrus gracilis Shaw, 1802. Lesson, however, makes no reference to Shaw's species, and includes only several species figured by Russell (1801) which were not conspecific with H. gracilis of Shaw, the latter being represented by pl. 13 in Russell (Cogger et al. 1983)) by monotypy, see Russell, P. 1801. A widely distributed species. Apparently rare in Australian waters, where it is known only from the Torres Strait region.
