Diagnosis

Metaniidae with body shape bulbous to massive. Consistency hard and brittle. Choanosomal skeleton alveolate with multispicular tracts. Spongin sparse. Megascleres oxeas to strongyles. Microscleres acanthostrongyles (acanthoxeas?) to pseudobirotules variably bent. Gemmules ovoid, scattered or rarely at the sponge base, enclosed in a variably developed cage of spiny megascleres ranging from oxeas to strongyles. Theca with three layers and gemmuloscleres radially embedded. Pneumatic layer as trabecules (fibres) of spongin. Gemmuloscleres boletiform.
