Adult female aggressive, persistent and active biter and readily attacks humans, cattle, sheep, humans, pigs, dogs, fowls, kangaroos, cats, horses and birds; adults caught in light and animal-baited traps; major nuisance pest in parts of northern Australia; vector of Wuchereria bancrofti (filariasis) outside of Australia; successful experimental infection of uniformis with the monkey malaria parasite Plasmodium cynomolgi and also known to be susceptible to human malaria; possible competent vector for Ross River, Murray Valley encephalitis and Kunjin viruses; isolation of Ross River fever, Edge Hill virus, Japanese encephalitis and an ungrouped arbovirus P5-350 from collections; larva found in association with all types of water plants (floating and emergent) in permanent and semi-permanent swamps, lagoons and waterholes; for extensive biological information see Lee et al.
