Diagnosis

The two species of Magia are easily distinguished from the only other Australian lophopid planthopper, Lophops saccharicida (Kirkaldy) which is small and brown with curious arcuate wings. Magia species are larger than 1 cm in length and have elongate, parallel-sided glassy wings. The genus is keyed by Soulier-Perkins (1998) using the following sequence of characters: apical spines of first hind tarsal segment forming a triangular zone; ocellar carinae present; tegmina with at least 60% of their surface transparent, costal vein not distinct from the costal margin; lateral margins of frons carinate from vertex-frons suture to frontoclypeal suture.
