Genus Alertigorgia Kükenthal, 1908

Systematics

In 1908, Kükenthal proposed the the genus name Alertigorgia solely to accommodate Iciligorgia orientalis Ridley, 1884 because that species did not fit the definition of Iciliogorgia Dussachaing, 1870. In 1916, Kükenthal proposed the new genus Machaerigorgia to replace Alertogorgia which he considered to be a nomen nudum (see Kükenthal 1924: 18, footnote) presumably because he proposed Alertogorgia without giving a definition of the genus or directly incuding an species. However, the name is available by indication because Kükenthal made reference to Ridley's description, which satisfies Article 12.2.1 of the Code. Consequently, because Iciligorgia orientalis was the only species assigned to Iciligigorgia by Ridley in his 1884 paper, it became the Type Species by indication (monotypy).
