Higher Taxon MYXINI

Introduction

The class Myxini includes a single order, Myxiniformes (Nelson 1994). Commonly known as hagfish, they lack true jaws and have an eel-like body. They are also distinguished by lacking vetebral centra and only having a notocord, a single semicircular canal and a single olfactory canal. The group is thought to have originated around 300 million years ago, but because of the lack of bone, it is not well known from fossils.
