Family MYOCOPTIDAE Gunther, 1942
Introduction
Mites in the family Myocoptidae are ectoparasites of small mammals. Their legs are adapted for grasping the hair of their host, but they feed on fluids from the host's skin (Domrow 1992). The six genera and 60 species were reviewed by Bochkov (2010). Only three species have been recorded in Australia. Myocoptes musculinus is a cosmopolitan pest of the house mouse in laboratory colonies, and the other two species have also been found on rodents.
