Family MOMONIIDAE Viets, 1926
- Momoniinae Viets, K. 1926. Versuch eines Systems der Hydracarinen. Zoologischer Anzeiger 69: 188-199.
Introduction
The Momoniidae is a large family of water mites whose adults are predators that occur in interstitial water in fresh water streams and pools. The larvae of some species are parasites on Trichoptera (Walter et al., 2009). Most genera are Holarctic, but the Australian fauna includes some genera that are endemic to Australia or the Australasian Region. The largest single work on Australian water mites is by Cook (1986), the world fauna was catalogued by Viets (1987), and the Australian fauna was reviewed by Harvey (1998), but more species in this family have been described after 1999 (Smit, 2007).
