Introduction
The Mithrodiidae are a small family known from the Indo-Pacific and Panamic regions. One species in each of the two known genera is recorded in Australian waters.
Mithrodiids are distinguished from other families within the order Valvatida by the following combination of character states: skeleton open or compact retictulate; whole surface, including spines, overlaid with thick skin bearing rough granules, tubercles or spinelets; interbrachial septa absent; ampullae double; pedicellariae elongate, multi-valved.
