Family MAZOCRAEIDAE Price, 1936

Introduction

The Mazocraedae are characterised as follows: Haptor developed on body proper or its posterior extension. Clamp-skeleton consisting of a dorsal and a ventral, single or paired loops, and more or less complex middle piece. Two or three pairs of anchors present on terminal lappet; larval hooklets may persist between anchor pairs or just above them. Intestinal crura with diverticula, not confluent posteriorly. Testes numerous or not numerous, rarely single. Common genital pore or cirrus armed with hooks. Vagina present or absent; when present, with single median opening, or rarely Y-shaped and opening laterally.

Mazocraeds are parasites of teleosts (Yamaguti 1963). Type-genus: Mazocraes Hermann, 1782.

Seven genera belonging to this family are represented in Australia.
