Introduction

Data included here are taken from Ben-Dov et al. (2005), who list 31 species in 13 genera for Australia. Most species are endemic, but several appear to have been introduced accidentally. This was probably so for the pests of sugar-cane, Eumargarodes laingi Jakubski and Margarodes australis (Jakubski). One of the Australian endemics, Icerya purchasi Maskell, the cottony cushion scale, is notorious for its devastating effect on the citrus industry in California, where it was accidentally introduced towards the end of the 19th Century. The natural host of this polyphagous margarodid is Acacia (Williams 1991).

The family arrangements of Ben-Dov (2011) are now adopted in this checklist.
