Family MACHUELLIDAE Balogh, 1983
Introduction
The family Machuellidae is small, with only two genera and 13 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2011). The known species occur in Europe, Polynesia, and the Oriental Region, with a few records in Madagascar and Mexico (Subias 2011). The Australian fauna includes a single species collected in moss and litter in sclerophyll forest in South Australia. Machuella ventrisetosa has been described as Pantropical and Palaearctic in distribution, but that conclusion is based on a concept of the species that includes a number of subspecies and synonyms (listed by Subias 2011), and some of those taxa may prove to be separate species when they are examined more closely (Colloff & Halliday 1998).
