Family LYCAEIDAE Claus, 1879

Introduction

The Lycaeidae are a small family of two or three genera and seven or eight species. All genera and five species are represented in Australian waters. Répelin (1978) reported most of the other species from the western and central Pacific. Harbison et al. (1977) and Madin & Harbison (1977) showed that most lycaeids are associated with salps. Bowman & Gruner (1973) and Vinogradov et al. (1982) have different concepts of this family group; both give keys to genera and Vinogradov et al. (1982) also provides keys to species.
