Genus Lithurgus Berthold, 1827

Introduction

The decision to use Lithurgus is given in detail by Michener ( (1997) who said "Latreille's original spelling (1825) has been regarded by many authors as French vernacular unavailable as a scientific name (e.g. Fox 1902). Such authors use the emended Latinized form Lithurgus Berthold (1827), published in a translation of Latreille's work into German. The spelling Lithurge, as noted by Fox (1902), was used by Lepeletier and Serville (1828: 795) but they were writing in French and used other French vernacular names. Lithurge was shown as the correct name by Sandhouse (1943) and has since been used by Michener (1944, 1951), Hurd (1979), and others in major studies and catalogues. I now believe, however, that the authors using Lithurgus are correct." [M. Batley, pers. comm. 2013]
