Genus Leptodialepis Haupt, 1929

Introduction

Leptodialepis Haupt, 1929 and Monodontonyx Haupt, 1929 have had a chequered history. Monodontonyx was synonymised by Arnold (1932:396) with Cyphononyx, as the type specimen was a synonym of Cyphononyx gowdeyi (Turner, 1918), but was raised again as a valid genus by Banks (1934:22). Haupt (1938:4) also synonymised Monodontonyx, but as a synonym of Diplonyx Saussure, 1887 and transferred all the species that Banks included in the genus in 1934 into Leptodialepis. Banks (1941:238) transferred what was then Cryptocheilus commixtus (Turner, 1910) to Monodontonyx, ignoring both previous synonymies of the genus and the transferrance of his previously determined Monodontonyx species to Leptodialepis.

It is clear that Banks (1934) misunderstood and misidentified species, erroneously placing them in Monodontonyx and Hemipepsis (see for example Haupt (1938a) or Van der Vecht (1949)). Consequently, [Elliott (2007) followed] the determination of Haupt (1938) that the species understood by Banks as Monodontonyx were Leptodialepis and place commixtus (Turner, 1910) in that genus.

Leptodialepis currently has three recognised subgenera; Leptodialepis s. str., Dinosalius (Banks, 1934) and Nyctalosalius (Wahis, 2003).
