Introduction

While previously treated as a family (e.g. Evenhuis 2008), a phylogenetic analysis by Mantič et al. (2020) found the Keroplatidae to be monophyletic only with the inclusion of the Lygistorrhinidae, which they subsequently treated as a subfamily within Keroplatidae. The Lygistorrhininae is a monogeneric subfamily of about seventeen species of fungus gnats (Evenhuis 2008), belonging to the Mycetophiloidea, and putatively the sister group to the Mycetophilidae (sensu stricto). Only one species is recorded from Australia.

Adult Lygistorrhininae are readily recognised by their elongate mouthparts which are many times the length of head, and by the very reduced wing venation with only two branches of the radius and CuA2 complete to the margin, and the medial sector with two fragmentary and one almost complete branch.
