Family LORDALYCIDAE Grandjean, 1939

Miscellaneous Literature Names

Introduction

The name of this family has sometimes been mis-spelled as Lordalychidae. The family includes a single genus Hybalicus Berlese, 1913, which is a synonym of Lordalycus Grandjean, 1938. The most substantial taxonomic work on the subject is by Theron & Ryke (1975), who described five species from soil in South Africa. Walter et al. (2009) described the family as common worldwide, and described or undescribed species have been described from Europe, South Africa, Malaysia, and North America. Nothing is known of their biology, but they appear to feed on fungi. The family is known from Australia only from an undescribed species of Hybalicus from Queensland (Walter et al. 2009), and unidentified Lordalychidae reported by Proctor et al. (2011). Womersley (1944) described Hybalicus gibbosus from Australia, but that species is now placed in the family Terpnacaridae, as Terpnacarus gibbosus.
