Family LIACARIDAE Sellnick, 1928

Introduction

The family Liacaridae is large and cosmopolitan, with 13 genera and 219 species world-wide (Schatz et al. 2009). Most of the species are placed in the large genus Liacarus, which reaches a high level of diversity in Europe and North America. The family is known from Australia from an unconfirmed record of an unidentified species of "Leiosoma [?]", on leaves of grapevine in Queensland, from Tryon (1889). This record is very questionable, and the specimens on which it is based have apparently been lost (Colloff & Halliday 1998). Stone & Simpson (1990) reported an unidentified species under bark in New South Wales.
