Introduction
The Laminosioptidae is a family of 28 ectoparasitic species of mites that occur in feather follicles and subcutaneous cysts in the skin of birds (OConnor 2009). Only five species are known from Australia, including four endemic species of Fainocoptes described from native birds (reviewed by Domrow 1992). The other species is the fowl cyst mite Laminosioptes cysticola, a cosmopolitan pest of poultry, which can sometimes cause significant pathology in its host (Seddon 1968; Mullen & OConnor 2009).
