Introduction
The family Laganidae is widespread throughout the Indo-West Pacific region. Five extant genera are known, two of which are recorded in Australian waters, represented by 10 species.
Laganids are distinguished from other clypeasteroid families by the following combination of character states: test flattened, outline angulated to rounded; petals well developed, pores usually conjugate; plates of petals all alike, and running across half the width of the petal; genital pores four or five; madreporic pores scattered or in sinuous grooves; aboral miliary spines ending in a crown or glandular bag; simple ambulacral food grooves present, not reaching margin.
