GENERAL
Although many authors have considered this genus to belong in the Pseudococcidae (see Morrison, H. & Morrison, E.R. 1966. An annotated list of generic names of the scale insects (Homoptera: Coccoidea). Miscellaneous Publication United States Department of Agriculture 1015: 1–206): it is clearly part of the Eriococcidae (see Williams, D.J. 1985. The British and some other European Eriococcidae (Homoptera: Coccoidea). Bulletin of the British Museum (Natural History), Entomology 51: 347–393 and Hoy, J.M. 1963. A catalogue of the Eriococcidae (Homoptera: Coccoidea) of the world. New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research Bulletin 150: 1–260). Kosztarab, M. 1968. Cryptococcidae, a new family of the Coccoidea (Homoptera). Virginia Journal of Science 19: 12 considered it to be in a separate family, Cryptococcidae.
SYSTEMATICS
Generic characteristics that distinguish this genus from all other eriococcids are: the possession of enlarged setae; microtubular ducts; no legs; antennae reduced to 3 or 4 segments (Ferris, G.F. 1919. Notes on Coccidae – IV. (Hemiptera). Canadian Entomologist 51: 249–253).
