Introduction

A typical kellerid species lives in loose association with other marine invertebrates. Most species have been found amongst plankton samples from shallow coastal waters, weed washings, or intertidal pools. There is one genus, and 11 species. See Boxshall & Halsey (2004: 557) for more details.

Hosts
The ten species of Kelleria are associated with crinoid echinoderms or live in loose association with various burrowing invertebrates (see Humes & Boxshall 1996: 188).

 

Diagnosis

The Kelleridae is established here as a monotypic family, readily distinguished from other lichomolgoid families and genera by the primitive state of the maxilliped in the female. It is the only genus in the complex in which the female maxilliped retains four discrete setation elements on a well developed endopodal segment. The setae on the maxillipedal basis are also particularly well developed. In other families the endopod typically forms a pointed process, probably incorporating a fused setation element.
