Family KRITHIDAE Mandelstam, 1960

Diagnosis

The family consists of mostly elongate forms, with more or less calcified valves, and sometimes with caudal process. Surface of valves smooth, only rarely faintly ornamented. Fused zone broad and penetrated by simple or branched pore canals. Inner margin and line of concrescence always separate on anterior end of valves. At anterior margin deep, pocket-like vestibulum present. Normal pore canals scarce. Hinge rectodont, pseudodont or pentodont. Antennula 5-segmented, segments short and stout. Antenna with 3 terminal claws. Respiratory plate of mandibula without aberrant seta. Second thoracopod on left side of body in males much stronger than on left side and prehensile. Caudal ramus with 2 setae.
