Family KRAMERELLIDAE Gaud & Mouchet, 1961
Introduction
Mites in the family Kramerellidae occur in the feathers of a variety of birds (Gaud & Atyeo 1996; OConnor 2009). The family includes seven genera, but only one, Freyanella, has been recorded in Australia, with four species described from ibis and spoonbills. The males of these species have bizarre body shapes, with setae that are often highly asymmetrical (Atyeo et al. 1972). As with most families of feather mites, many more species will be found when the mite fauna of Australian birds is surveyed more extensively.
