Superfamily KAMPYLOMYARIAE Stiasny, 1921

Introduction

The superfamily Kampylomyariae comprises the sinlge family Cassiopeidae, or as they are commonly known the upside-down jellyfish. They are well represented in Australian waters. They have subumbrellar muscles which are in feather-like arcs, and they usually sit upside-down on the substrate, gently pulsating.

 

Diagnosis

Kolpophorae with subumbrellar muscles in feather-like arcs. Radial canals usually about twice as many as rhopalia (more or less than 32). Without or with faintly indicated ring canal. With four completely separated subgenital cavities. Subgenital ostia small, round. Stomach circular. Arm disk octagonal, with four primary canals.
