Family KALLIAPSEUDIDAE Lang, 1956

Compiler and date details

April 2011 - Kelly Merrin

Introduction

Kalliapseudids are benthic, shallow-water filter feeders mostly from circumtropical and subtropical regions. About 48 species in 13 genera are known. Drumm & Heard (2011) have completed the most recent review of this family. Sieg (1986) united Cirratodactylidae and Kalliapseudidae, taxa now treated by some as subfamilies. This arrangement is different from that of Gutu (1972, 1981, 1996) and Gutu & Sieg (1999) who treated Cirratodactylus as a synonym of Psammokalliapseudes Lang, 1956. Hemikalliapseudinae was not accepted as a higher category by Sieg (1996) but is listed by Gutu (1996), Gutu & Sieg (1999) and Drumm & Heard (2011). There are four genera known in Australia with 14 Australian species. Drumm & Heard (2011) provided a key to genera and species.

Diagnosis

Pleon with 5 pleonites. Mandibular palp 1– or 3–articled. Maxilla 1 without palp. Epignath of maxilliped broad, cup-shaped. Inner caudodistal seta of maxillipedal endite not transformed into leaf-shaped spine. Pereopod 1 never uniform (not ambulatory), stronger than the others (fossorial), dactylus with curled setae or transformed into an aesthetasc-like structure. Pereopods 2–5 with or without aesthetasc-like structure or curled setae on dactylus. Pereopod 6 transformed, smaller than the others, with or without aestetasc-like structure or curled setae on dactylus.
