Family JENKINIDAE Borojevic, Boury-Esnault & Vacelet, 2000

Introduction

Jenkinidae presently contains 6 genera (Breitfussia Borojevic et al., Jenkina Brøndsted, Leucascandra Borojevic et al., Anamixilla Poléjaeff, Polejaevia Borojevic et al. and Uteopsis Dendy & Row), all characterised by an inarticulated choanoskeleton (Borojevic et al. 2002). The growth of these long tubular sponges into a large branched cormus, such as observed in Leucascandra, Anamixilla and Uteopsis, is a consequence of the restriction of their radial growth, and this is unique to the Leucosolenida

Diagnosis

Leucosolenida with syconoid, sylleibid or leuconoid organisation. The thin wall surrounding the large atrial cavity is supported by tangential atrial and cortical skeletons, and essentially an inarticulated choanoskeleton consisting of unpaired actines of the subatrial triactines and/or tetractines, and occasionally with small radial diactines. The proximal part of the large radial diactines that protrude from the external surface, or the tangential triactines scattered irregularly in the cortex, may also form the choanoderm. Large cortical tetractines or subcortical pseudosagittal triactines are not present.
