Collingwood : CSIRO Publishing Vol. 4 xiv 529 pp. & CD-ROM. [296] (Note #592. Sandava xylistis Swinhoe, 1900 was described by Swinhoe (1900). The same name was used and described by Meyrick (1902b). Poole (1989) seemed in doubt about the status of S. xylistis Meyrick. S. xylistis Meyrick is a junior primary homonym and a junior subjective synonym of S. xylistis Swinhoe as the two specific names are based on different syntypic series. Almost certainly, what happened was that Meyrick obtained specimens, coined a manuscript name and waited while he accumulated undescribed noctuids for his paper which eventually appeared in 1902. In the meantime he identified specimens sent to him; so Lower used the name in 1895 without making it available (a nomen nudum) aware that Meyrick intended to publish it. There must have been two specimens in the HOPE identified by Meyrick. Swinhoe, unaware of the situation but able to ascertain that the name was unpublished therefore published it. Fortunately, both Meyrick and Swinhoe described the same species although there is a common and similar undescribed species)
