Subspecies not identified in Mahoney & Ride (1988: 29), synonymies followed Lyne & Mort (1981: 129, 130) — including extralimital synonym P. moresbyensis.

Prefers areas with dense ground cover, including tall grass and shrubs, irrespective of kind of tree cover, digs shallow nesting depressions, excavates prey.
