Genus Illawarra Gray, 2010

Introduction

The monotypic genus Illawarra is included in the subfamily Atracinae Hogg, along with the genera Hadronyche L. Koch and Atrax O.P-Cambridge. The single species is found in the Illawarra region of New South Wales.

Illawarra can be distinguished from other atracine genera by possession of a combination of: tibia II unmodified (males only); tarsi I and II with a complete mid-ventral spine row in addition to lateral rows (males only); robust, aspinose leg I, with metatarsus partially fused to the tarsus, and enlarged tarsal claws (females only); frontally narrow, weakly raised caput; relatively weak cheliceral paturons; short, basal central cheliceral tooth row; and short labium.

Burrows are in the litter layer or under rocks, the silk lining is weak or absent, and entrances lack trip-lines. Spiders are reported to have an ‘ant-like’ smell.
