Introduction

Hyptiogastrine are predominantly Australian in distribution, although several species of Pseudofoenus are endemic to the south-west Pacific islands of New Guinea, Fiji, New Caledonia, New Zealand and Vanuatu (Jennings & Austin 1994; Jennings & Austin 2002), and two species are endemic to South America (Jennings & Austin 1997a). Females of the Australian genus Hyptiogaster have a long, exserted ovipositor, whereas in other hyptiogastrines the ovipositor is short and hidden (Jennings & Austin 1997b; Jennings & Austin 2002).
