Hypena laceratalis Walker, [1859] was deliberately introduced to Australia from Africa via Hawaii in 1965 to control the weed Lantana camara (L.) (Julien 1992). The introduced strain differs in minor genitalic characters from the strain presumed to be naturally present in Australia. The populations [were] treated [by Edwrads 1996] as conspecific. There has been much confusion over the correct name for this species. Some authors have confused two distinct species or species groups: the Hypena strigatus (Fabricius, 1798) group and the H. rectivittalis Moore, 1867 group. The Australian species belongs to the H. strigatus (Fabricius) group and has been referred to under this name or as Hypena laceratalis Walker, [1859]. Most modern authors (e.g., Robinson 1975) use the name H. laceratalis Walker and this [was] tentatively followed [in the 1996 Checklist] although the specimen labelled as 'Type' in the BMNH is without an abdomen. The holotype of Hypena strigatus (Fabricius), in ZMUC, has been examined but it has not been dissected. The following additional names seem to belong to the H. strigatus (Fabricius) group of species: Hypena abyssinialis Guenée, 1854; Hypena jussalis Walker, [1859]; Hypena ignotalis Walker, [1859] (these two Walker names were published simultaneously with H. laceratalis Walker, [1859]); Hypena dispunctalis Walker, [1866] and Hypena squamea Hampson, 1891. This group is in need of thorough taxonomic revision which should precede any further use of the species for biological control purposes)
