Taxonomic Decision for Synonymy

 

Introduction

The 10 described genera are found in Africa and the Oriental Region, with Stipesa Sharp now known from Australia (Chandler 2001: 495).

 

Diagnosis

Squamous setae present over most of body; body generally compact; at least head and pronotum usually closely punctate. Head with frontal rostrum short but prominent and narrow; antennal insertions close, antennomeres short and transverse; lacking ocular-mandibular carinae; clypeal apex broadly rounded, lateral margins relatively straight to eyes; carinate ventrolateral margins continuing apically to form ridge of clypeal apex; maxillary palpi small, with 2 or 3 segments except in Mestogaster Schmidt-Göbel, first segments of maxillary palpi short and indistinct. Pronotum lacking antebasal sulcus and paranotal carinae. Abdomen with visible tergite 1 (IV) not markedly longer than the other tergites except in Mestogaster; visible tergite 1 (IV) and visible sternite 2 (IV) with deep basal sulci; paratergites narrow and obscure, projecting only in Apharina Reitter. Legs with only single claws on tarsi.
