Introduction

This is a moderately speciose subfamily comprising small to medium sized braconids. The group is morphologically diverse and undoubtedly not monophyletic, but like Whitfield & Wharton (1997) the subfamily is used here for convenience. Some members have previously been treated within the extant cyclostome subfamilies Rogadinae and Doryctinae, or the Pambolinae and Exothecinae which are here subsumed within the Hormiinae. Several genera have the second and third metasomal tegites expanded and at least partly carapace-like (see Cheloninae).

The subfamily is worldwide in distribution and the Australian fauna is suspected of being large, with 48 species already decribed. Hormiines are ectoparasitoids of mostly concealed larval hosts including Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and rarely Hymenoptera and Diptera.
