  • Psephotus chrysopterygius blaauwi van Oort, E.D. 1910. On a new form of the genus Psephotus. Notes from the Leyden Museum 32: 71-72 [71] [based on four males and two females from 'Port Darwin' in the cages of F.E. Blaauw, a male of which was acquired by RMNH—remainder apparently lost; given the circumstances, the type locality cannot be defined more precisely than Arnhem Land].

Arnhem Land, formerly north to N coast, east to about McArthur River, south to McArthur and Roper River catchments, and west to Mary and upper Daly Rivers, also Melville-Bathurst Ils—now apparently restricted to mainland from upper Mary River east to western shores of Gulf of Carpentaria and south-east to Roper River, but absent from N coastal plain west of and including Arnhem Land escarpment from South Alligator River.

Ecological Descriptors

Arboreal, diurnal, granivore, gregarious, low open woodland, nomadic, open forest, resident, terrestrial, volant, woodland.

Extra Ecological Information

Seasonal breeder, sexually dimorphic, in well-grassed eucalypt and paperbark (Melaleuca) woodland and open forest with termitaria, feeds almost exclusively on grass seeds on or near the ground, groups in pairs or small flocks, flies in shallow undulations bringing wings in to side of body, nests on bed of earth in excavated burrows in termitaria, incubation by female, both sexes rear pale grey-downed, yellowish-billed chicks, wanders locally or regionally to seasonal food sources.
