Genus Homophymia Vacelet & Vasseur, 1971
- Homophymia Vacelet, J. & Vasseur, P. 1971. Eponges des récifs coralliens de Tuléar (Madagascar). Téthys Supplement 1: 51-126 pls 1-4 [63].
Type species:
Homophymia lamellosa Vacelet & Vasseur, 1971 by monotypy.
Introduction
Pisera & Lévi (2002) note that this genus was originally classified with some uncertainty within the Corallistidae, based on its monaxial desmas (Corallistidae, as here understood, has dichotriaenes as their ectosomal spicules, never pseudophyllotriaenes). The allocation of this genus into Neopeltidae was based on its monaxial desmas and ectosomal pseudophyllotriaenes (see also Kelly, 2000).
Distribution
IMCRA
Norfolk Island Province (21)
Diagnosis
Thickly lamellar (consisting of several cylindrical individuals) or thickly globular with long stalk supplied with axial cavity. Desmas are pseudotetraclones (monocrepid), ectosomal megascleres are smooth pseudophyllotriaenes (monocrepid, crepis in the rhabd); microscleres consist of a single type of amphiaster.
