Family TETRASQUILLIDAE Manning & Camp, 1993

Compiler and date details

May 2012 - Peter Davie, Queensland Museum, Brisbane

Introduction

Four genera are now recorded in this family for Australian genera. Revisionary work shows that Heterosquillidae is a junior synonym of Tetrasquillidae (Ahyong & Harling 2000; Ahyong 2001).

Like lysiosquillids, tetrasquillids occupy burrows on soft substrates, but usually in relatively deeper waters exceeding 50–60 metres.

Diagnosis

Cornea bilobed; typically with six rows of hexagonal ommatidia in the mid-band. Third and fourth maxillipeds with propodi ribbed or beaded ventrally. Abdominal articulation compact. Raptorial claw with dactylus uninflated basally. Pereiopod 3 with slender or elongate-oval endopod. Telson with primary teeth and denticles distinct, slender, not fused into margin. Dorsal margin of uropodal endopod with weak dorsal proximal fold.
