Zoologische Jahrbucher 2: 87–108 (90) as Spongilla lacustris Linnaeus, 1759 which is restricted to the Northern Hemisphere; central Australian material wrongly identified as Ephydatia multidentata Ris, 1931 by Gee, N.G. 1931. Freshwater sponges from Australia and New Zealand. Records of the Australian Museum 18: 25–62 (51)].
    Type data:
     Holotype AM Z2904 (egaz), Bokhara River near Brewarrina, NSW [29°55'S 146°42'E].

 

Distribution

Extra Distribution Information

W slopes and plains of E Australia, ranging W to central Australia, rarely penetrating the Dividing Range eastward.


Ecological Descriptors

Lentic freshwater, lotic freshwater.

Extra Ecological Information

Generally in alkaline lotic waters, massive and bulbous growth, consistency hard and firm, armature of gemmules well developed in arid areas.
