Subfamily Heterocotylinae Chisholm, Wheeler & Beverley-Burton, 1995

Introduction

The Heterocotylinae accommodates monocotylids that have sclerotised structures on the dorsal surface of the haptor. Genera in this subfamily are: Heliocotyle Neifar, Euzet & Ben Hassine, 1999'; Heterocotyle Scott, 1904; Myliocotyle Neifar, Euzet & Ben Hassine, 1999; Neoheterocotyle Hargis, 1955; Potamotrygonocotyle Mayes, Brooks & Thorson, 1981; and Spinuris Doran, 1953. Three of these seven genera are reported in Australia and a total of 11 valid species. Heterocotylines parasitise gills of dasyatid and myliobatid stingrays, sawfish and rhinobatids.
